<p>As of October 1, the timetable on route 94 will change. There will be no trips on Thursdays, but two trips will run on Wednesdays at adjusted times. All other trips remain unchanged.</p>

<p>The bus stop Borg in Grímsnes will be relocated as of 30 September and will then be situated by the swimming pool. Routes 72 and 73 stop at this location.</p>

<p>As of 30 September, routes 51 and 52 will return to their regular timetable. The schedules were temporarily adjusted while Herjólfur was in dock, but now that the ferry is out of dry dock, the routes will resume their standard schedule.</p>

<p>On Monday, 22 September, there will be free access to Strætó buses both in the capital area and in the countryside. The occasion is Car-Free Day, which is part of European mobility week that began on September 16th.</p>
<p>Car-Free Day is a great opportunity to leave the car at home and try other ways of getting around. Whether it’s hopping on the bus, cycling, walking or even jogging to work or school, the day encourages us to explore more diverse and sustainable modes of transport.</p>
<p>We invite everyone to take part and enjoy travelling in an environmentally friendly and affordable way.</p>


Car-free day – Free buses on September 22nd

<p>The theme is a call to envision and work towards a society where transport services are available, accessible, affordable, safe and inclusive. Choosing public transport, walking or cycling should be a fair option for everyone.</p>
<p>Mobility week is a European awareness-raising campaign to improve transports in cities and towns, and Strætó has participated since the campaign was first launched in Iceland.</p>
<p>A variety of engaging events will be held during the week, including the seminar <strong><em>Diverse Mobility for Everyone</em></strong>, which takes place at 9:00 on 18 September at Reykjavík City Hall. The car-free day will also be held us usual on September 22<sup>nd</sup>.</p>

Mobility Week – Mobility for Everyone

<p>In recent weeks, there has been discussion in society about the experiences of LGBTQ+ people, including in the television program <em>Hatur</em> on RÚV, where particular attention was given to the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals in public spaces. Following this discussion, Strætó has taken action and started collaboration with Flotinn – the mobile youth center – as well as the Queer youth centre at S78 (national queer organisation ) and Tjörnin leisure centre.</p>
<p>The aim of this collaboration is to ensure that all passengers feel welcome and safe on board Strætó buses, with a special focus on younger passengers and youth.</p>
<p>The collaboration focuses on:<br />
• placing special emphasis on ensuring <strong>everyone is welcome on board</strong><br />
• encouraging both staff and passengers <strong>to speak up if something happens</strong><br />
• <strong>providing inclusion education</strong> for Strætó staff<br />
•<strong> strengthening procedures</strong> to respond quickly and appropriately to incidents</p>
<p>Strætó aims to be a genuine choice for everyone and emphasizes that public transport should be a safe way to travel. In the coming weeks, the next steps of the collaboration will be developed jointly and presented to the public.</p>

Safe Public Transport – Everyone Welcome on Board

<p>An additional trip will be operated on Tuesday, 9 September, on route 93 as the Norræna ferry will be sailing that day instead of Wednesday. This is a one-time case as the ferry is now switching to its winter schedule. Therefore, there will be an additional trip on both Tuesday and Wednesday this week, but from now on it will be on Wednesdays in line with the Norræna’s sailings.</p>

<p>The timetable on route 52 will change from September 8 when Herjólfur goes to dry dock and the ferry Baldur takes over. This arrangement is expected to last until September 29.</p>
<p>Baldur will operate according to the summer schedule, and therefore it is necessary to adjust the timetable to match the new sailing times.</p>
<p>The timetable on route 51 will be adjusted on weekends during this period and will revert back as soon as Herjólfur is out of dry dock.</p>

Changes to Routes 51 and 52 September 8th

<p>On August 28, winter schedule will begin on <strong>route</strong> <strong>59</strong>.</p>
<p>On August 30, winter schedule will begin on <strong>route</strong> <strong>56</strong>.</p>
<p>On September 1, winter schedule will begin on <strong>route</strong> <strong>94</strong>. The bus will no longer stop in Breiðdalsvík, and the only stop in Höfn will be at the airport.</p>
<p><strong>Route</strong> <strong>93</strong> will also change: starting September 10, the additional trip on this route will move to Wednesdays to align with the Norræna ferry schedule.</p>
<p><strong>Routes 61</strong> and <strong>62</strong> in the Westfjords will stop operating on August 31.</p>
<p>Service has already started on <strong>routes</strong> <strong>63</strong>, <strong>64</strong>, <strong>65</strong>, and<strong> 81</strong>. These routes follow the school calendar and will therefore only operate on school days.</p>


Winter Schedule for the country side

<p>Night bus will depart from Skúlagata all weekend due to street closures on Reykjavík Culture Night. This applies to both Friday night and Saturday night.</p>
<p><strong>Inactive bus stops:</strong> Barónsstígur, Bíó Paradís, Þjóðleikhúsið, Lækjartorg A, Lækjartorg B og Ráðhúsið.</p>

<p>This change marks an important step toward better and more accessible public transportation in the capital area. The percentage of residents living within 400 meters of a bus stop with 10-minute frequency during peak hours will rise from about 18% to over <strong>50%.</strong></p>
<p>The goal of these changes is to improve residents&#8217; access to transport with good frequency and therefore increase the use of public transport.</p>
<p>This service increase is part of the Transport Agreement and Strætó’s operational plan, and also serves as preparation for the New Network set to be implemented in 2031. With the changes approaching, it is important that users familiarize themselves with them.</p>

Increased Strætó Service Starting August 17

<p>This weekend marked the 26th annual Reykjavík Pride, where thousands gathered in downtown Reykjavík to take part in the Pride Parade, celebrate diversity, and support all queer people. As in previous years, Strætó participated in the parade, and this year&#8217;s <em>Pride Bus</em> is beautifully decorated with artworks by Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir / Shoplifter, celebrating diversity on its journey through the capital area. The advertising agency Hér&amp;Nú designed this  year&#8217;s Pride bus.</p>

Changes on routes 51 and 52 this summer

<p>In Strætó&#8217;s sustainability report, you can find many interesting facts about Strætó, such as energy usage, passenger numbers, the most popular bus stops and greenhouse gas emissions, to name a few. The bus fleet of both Strætó and its contractors is also reviewed, but the goal is to have a carbon-free fleet by the end of 2029.</p>

<p>Starting <strong>August 17, 2025, </strong>Strætó will significantly increase its service in the capital area. This increase is part of the <strong>Transport Agreement</strong> and Strætó’s operational plan, and a step toward the <strong>New Network</strong> set to be implemented in 2031.</p>


More Service, Better Frequency, Longer Operating Hours – More People Using Strætó

Strætó Service Increase 2025

<p>The reception of Strætó will be closed over the weekend and Whit Monday June 9th, but the Strætó call center will be open these days from 10:00 – 14:00.</p>


Strætó schedule over Pentecost (Hvítasunna)

<p>The Akurholt bus stop has been temporarily moved due to work on the renewal of the heating system and high-voltage cables at Háholt in Hafnarfjörður.</p>

Akurholt bus stop temporarily moved

<p>Starting June 1, cash payments will no longer be accepted for fares on Strætó buses in the capital area. This change does <em>not</em> apply to rural buses in the countryside, where customers will still be able to pay with cash or by card (POS system).</p>
<p>Customers will still be able to pay with cash at Strætó’s reception, located at Hestháls 14.</p>
<p><strong>Many payment options available</strong></p>
<p>A wider range of payment options is now available and for example, customers can now pay contactless on board all buses in the capital area. Currently, only 2.3% of passengers pay with cash on board the buses.</p>
<p>Klapp ten and Klapp cards can still be purchased with cash at Strætó’s sales locations. Parallel with this change, the number of sales locations will be increased.</p>

<p><strong>Is this legal? / Can Strætó refuse to accept cash?</strong><br />
Yes. According to the Central Bank of Iceland, it is permitted to refuse cash payments if alternative payment methods are available.</p>

<p><strong>Isn’t this a violation of the Icelandic Currency Act or the Central Bank Act?</strong><br />
No. These laws only state that banknotes (paper money) and coins issued by the Central Bank are legal tender for all payments in Iceland. However, they do not prohibit a seller from choosing other forms of payment. The status of legal tender simply means it is the final measure of value in transactions between parties.</p>

<p><strong>Why is this being done?</strong><br />
Only about 2.3% of passengers currently pay with cash, and managing cash involves significant costs. The aim is to simplify the payment process, and more payment options are now available than before.</p>

<p><strong>What if there’s a power outage or no internet connection?</strong><br />
If there is a serious or prolonged power or network outage that prevents payment by card or other electronic methods on Strætó buses, the board of Strætó may temporarily allow cash payments depending on the situation. This will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.</p>

<p><strong>Can I remain anonymous? I don’t want to leave a trace.</strong><br />
Yes. If a passenger uses Klapp ten purchased with cash, the use cannot be traced back to the individual. You can also sign in anonymously in the Klappið app. Otherwise, Strætó does not track passengers’ trips through contactless payments or use of period passes/single tickets, and no credit card information is stored in Strætó’s systems.</p>

Strætó stops accepting cash payments on buses as of June 1

<p>The schedule of few rural routes of Strætó will change over the summertime. Routes in the capital area remain unchanged.</p>
<p><strong>South Iceland</strong></p>

<p>The schedule will change from July 1st – August 10th due to summer schedule of Herjólfur sailings.</p>
<p>Estra trips during „Þjóðhátíð“ on route 52 will be announced later.</p>
<p><strong>North- and Northeast Iceland</strong></p>

<p>The route will drive all weekdays from June 2 – August 29.</p>

<p>The trip on Wednesdays will change and the bus will drive all the way to Hólmavík (instead of just to Búðardalur). This will be from June 4 – August 27.</p>

<p>These routes only drive during school days, the last day of driving is June 2. These routes will start again August 25.</p>

Summer schedule 2025

<p>The annual meeting of Strætó will be held on Wednesday, June 4th. The meeting starts at 14:00 and will be in Tjarnarsalur, Reykjavík City hall.</p>
<p>The main aspects of Strætó’s work from the year 2024 will be covered, together with the annual report, and there will also be presentations related to public transport. The meeting will be held in Icelandic.</p>
<p>Everyone is welcome to the meeting, and we especially encourage Strætó users to come to the meeting if they can.</p>
<p><em>Light refreshments will be available.</em></p>

<p>The VÆB bus is now on the roads, decorated in a fun silver style with pictures of the VÆB brothers. The VÆB brothers along with other Eurovision participants got ride with the bus to Keflavík Airport last week when they left for Switzerland. The bus is now driving regular routes, but you can see where it is located, and which route it is driving as it is marked on the real-time map.</p>
<p>We wish the VÆB brothers good luck on the big stage on Tuesday. Go Iceland!</p>

The VÆB bus is on the road

<p>On Thursday 1<sup>st</sup> of May, route 94, which runs between Breiðdalsvík and Hornafjörður starts driving according to a summer schedule.</p>
<p>The bus journey begins in Höfn, stops in Djúpivogur and ends in Breiðdalsvík before driving back the same way.</p>
<p>The bus drives on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and then Sundays.</p>
