Route 66 has now been added to the regional bus network. The route drive through Patreksfjörður, Tálknafjörður and Bíldudalur, and continues to Bíldudalur Airport. The route starts to operate September 1st.
Route 66 operates in accordance with Norlandair’s published flight schedule at Bíldudalur Airport. The route does not operate for additional Norlandair flights that are outside the published flight schedule.
The bus follows the timetable, but times may change if Norlandair’s flight schedule changes, for example due to winter weather and road conditions. Passengers are advised to check the flight schedule if weather or road conditions are poor.

New route in the Westfjords added to the regional bus network

Changes to the route 56 service will take effect from September 1, when the route will no longer drive on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The winter schedule will then come into effect on September 6, with changes to departure times as follows:

<li>On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, the departure from Akureyri Airport will change from 14:53 to 16:35.</li>
<li>On Sundays, the departure from Egilsstaðir will change from 08:30 to 12:20, and the departure from Akureyri Airport will change from 16:35 to 16:50.</li>

Winter schedule on route 56

The winter timetable for Route 59, Borgarnes–Hólmavík, begins on Tuesday, September 1. The route will continue to operate on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. However, departure times will change on Wednesdays and Fridays, and on Wednesdays the route will operate only between Borgarnes and Búðardalur.

New subscription cards for regional buses, Rural area cards, as well as student cards with a new and more flexible structure, are now available for purchase. The cards can be purchased through the <a href="https://www.straeto.is/en/store/countryside">Strætó online store.</a>

Rural area cards – new subscription cards

Rural area cards are new subscription cards for regional buses. They are valid on specific routes between towns within each region, without travel through the capital area. They offer a more affordable option for passengers who travel regularly on these routes.
The routes selected for the Rural area cards are those for which there has been the most demand. If there is demand for additional routes, Vegagerðin (The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration) will consider adding them.

The same age categories and discount terms apply to Rural area cards as to Regional cards. Regional cards, which have been available since 2022, will continue to be sold at the same prices and under the same terms.

Student cards – new and more flexible options

Student cards are also now available with a new and more flexible structure. Students can choose the option that best suits their travel needs – either a Regional card or a Rural area card – and receive a 50% discount on the selected card. Cards are now available for 1, 3 or 12 months.
Previously, students could only purchase a card for a specific region, valid for six months from the date of purchase. The new structure therefore gives students greater flexibility and allows them to choose a subscription based on the routes they use most frequently.

The winter schedule will begin on Monday, August 24, on five regional bus routes: routes 50, 51, 52, 53, and 71.
On routes 50, 51, and 71, the number of trips will be reduced outside peak hours. When deciding to reduce the number of trips on these three routes, Vegagerðin (the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration) considered passenger numbers and how heavily the services are used. There will be no changes to services connected to secondary schools, morning services serving normal working hours and afternoon services when the regular working day ends.

Strætó service on Reykjavík Culture Night 2026

Strætó has increased services on the capital area’s busiest route. The additional services are intended to accommodate the significant increase in passenger numbers that typically comes with the start of the school year, when most people have returned to work after their summer holidays.
Three additional buses will be added to route 1 from Hafnarfjörður on weekday mornings, bringing the total number of additional buses on the route to five, with two already in service. Route 1 is the busiest route in the capital area throughout the year, but experience shows that passenger numbers increase significantly in the autumn. This also means that buses are often very crowded and may even reach capacity.
With more buses in service, the likelihood of overcrowding will be significantly reduced, while the frequency of departures will remain unchanged at every 10 minutes during peak hours.

Strætó increases services ahead of the autumn rush

New schedules for routes 78, 79 and 56 will take effect on Monday, August 17.
Main changes are:
<ul>
<li>Route 56: On weekdays, the departure from Akureyri will be moved earlier due to the bridge construction on Jökulsá á Fjöllum. Delays can be expected on the route due to the construction work from August 17 through August 31. The winter schedule is estimated to start in the beginning of September.</li>
<li>The bus on route 56 from Akureyri Airport will depart at 2:53 PM instead of 4:35 PM.</li>
<li>Route 79: On weekday morning services, the bus will first stop at Akureyri airport, then continue to VMA, MA and HA. Hof in Akureyri will also become the route&#8217;s starting and ending point instead of the airport.</li>
<li>Route 79: The arrival in Húsavík on the second weekday trip will be later to match the departure time from Akureyri.</li>
<li>Routes 79 and 78: The first route 79 service on Sundays, as well as the Sunday service on route 78, will depart earlier.</li>

Strætó took part in the Reykjavík Pride Parade, as in previous years, and it’s safe to say that joy was everywhere.
When designing this year’s Pride Bus, we decided to celebrate the rainbow, inspired by this year’s Pride slogan: United under the rainbow. The bus was decorated from top to bottom in the colours of the rainbow and certainly stood out in the parade. The advertising agency Hér&amp;Nú designed the Pride Bus, creating a colourful and eye-catching result.
For the second year in a row, Strætó invited neurodivergent people to join the Pride Parade on board the Pride Bus. This gave them the opportunity to take part in the celebrations from a calmer and more comfortable space, helping to reduce sensory overload.
At Strætó, we are all on different journeys, but all together we can travel in the same direction – towards a more equal, diverse and caring society.
Congratulations to Reykjavík Pride on a fantastic festival and a big thank you to everyone who joined us and celebrated a wonderful day.

Solidarity and Celebrations at the Pride Parade

On 12 August, a total solar eclipse will be visible from several locations in Iceland. Large numbers of people are expected to travel to the path of totality to experience this unique natural event, and increased traffic is therefore expected across many parts of the country.
Although Strætó services will operate as scheduled, heavy traffic may affect journey times. Passengers are encouraged to monitor <a href="https://www.straeto.is/en/route-planner/status-of-trips">Route alerts</a> throughout the day and allow extra time for their journeys.

You can pay your fare on board all buses – using contactless payment in the Capital Area and a payment card on regional services.

Capital Area

Strætó services will operate according to the regular timetable. However, several routes will be diverted due to road closures, and longer journey times are expected, particularly on routes serving western Reykjavík and Seltjarnarnes.
<ul>
<li>Route 11 will operate as usual to Seltjarnarnes despite the road closures. Traffic control will be in place to allow the bus through.</li>
</ul>
Detours:
<ul>
<li>Routes 12 and 15 will not be able to use Suðurgata in Reykjavík due to road closures.
<ul>
<li>Route 12 will end it´s journey in HÍ.</li>
<li>Route 15 will operate directly along Hringbraut from the Gamla Hringbraut stop to the next available stop, Ægisborg, with one stop in between, HÍ.</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Route 19 will drive Skólvangur and Herjólfsgata instead of Hjallabraut due to road closure.</li>
<li>Route 23 will operate the Álftanes loop in the opposite direction due to temporary one-way traffic.</li>

Regional buses will operate according to the regular timetable, with the exception of Route 59, where the Wednesday service has been moved to Tuesday, 11 August.
Heavy traffic may cause delays and affect connections between routes. Information about delays and service disruptions will be updated throughout the day under <a href="https://www.straeto.is/en/route-planner/status-of-trips">Route alerts</a> whenever possible.
Please note that connections between regional bus services and the Herjólfur and Baldur ferry services may be affected.

Children should not travel alone on regional buses
The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration advises that children under the age of 15 should not travel alone on regional bus services on 12 August.
Heavy traffic and delays may affect journey times and route connections. Increased demand on mobile and communication networks is also expected.
Be prepared
Please plan your journey carefully and familiarise yourself with your route and destination before travelling. Bring any necessary medication, food, water, and suitable clothing, and allow extra time for your journey.
The Icelandic authorities encourage people who live within the path of totality to enjoy the eclipse close to home, helping to reduce pressure on the road network and other infrastructure. Those planning to travel should prepare well, depart early, and expect longer journey times than usual.

Solar Eclipse on 12 August – Information about Strætó Services

Strætó passengers can now enjoy more accurate real-time arrival information thanks to a system update and improved integration between the platforms that provide real-time data. The same information is now on bus stop displays, in the Klapp app, on the Strætó website, and in Google Maps and Apple Maps.
With this update, arrival predictions take more factors into account than before, including detours that may affect bus journeys. This provides passengers with more accurate and reliable information about when the next bus will arrive.
Improving real-time information is part of Strætó’s ongoing efforts to enhance the passenger experience. Over the past months, several new features have been introduced to make public transport more accessible and reliable. Passengers can now also pay for their journeys contactless on board using a payment card, Google Pay or Apple Pay, and plan their trips using popular navigation apps such as Google Maps and Apple Maps.

Schedule for Routes 51 and 53 during Þjóðhátíð Festival 2026

The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration (Vegagerðin) announces that in accordance with the schedule of Herjólfur ferry, the summer schedule for Routes 51, 52, and 53 will take effect Monday 20 July and end Sunday 23 August.

Updated Summer Schedule on Routes 51, 52, and 53

A new price list will take effect on 16 July 2026. Prices for single fares remain unchanged, but the price of period passes will increase by 3.45%. This increase also applies to period passes purchased with a discount.   
Adult 30 day passes thus increase from 11.600 kr. to 12.000 kr. and adult yearly passes increase from 116.000 kr. to 120.000 kr.  
Single fare for adults remains at 690 kr. and the price of Klapp plastic cards and keychains also remains at 1.000 kr.  
The decision to update prices was made in line with the projected consumer price index increase for the year. Strætó’s price list is reviewed twice a year, with the last update being on 6 January 2026.  
These pricing updates only apply to Strætó services in the Capital Area.  
The new price list will take effect on Thursday 16 July 2026.

Due to roadworks on Suðurlandsvegur, the last two departures of the day on Route 51 have been cancelled this evening, 22 June.

Last two departures cancelled on route 51

Due to changes in the operation of public transport services in the Capital Region, Almenningssamgöngur höfuðborgarsvæðisins ohf. (ASHB) will assume responsibility for the operation of Klapp payment system from Strætó bs. on 1 July 2026.
As a result, personal data relating to Klapp users will be transferred from Strætó to ASHB in order to ensure the continued provision of the service, including users&#8217; access to their accounts, tickets and subscriptions within Klapp. Following the transfer, ASHB will become the data controller of the personal data processing carried out within Klapp.
This change will not affect the use of Klapp or customer services.
The transfer of personal data is necessary to ensure continuity of service for users, including continued access to valid tickets, subscriptions and user accounts. The transfer is based on the legitimate interests of Strætó and ASHB, pursuant to Article 9(6) of Act No. 90/2018 on Data Protection and the Processing of Personal Data (corresponding to Article 6(1)(f) GDPR).
Users have the right to object to processing that is based on legitimate interests. Any objection must be submitted to <a href="mailto:personuvernd@straeto.is">personuvernd@straeto.is</a> no later than 28 June 2026. Any objections received will be handled in accordance with documented procedures.
If an objection is upheld, it may not be possible to transfer information relating to the user&#8217;s account, tickets or subscriptions to ASHB. In such circumstances, the user will be required to create a new account in order to use the service following the transfer of operations.
Users who have no objections to this transfer are not required to take any action. The change will not affect their rights or their continued use of Klapp.

New Operator of Klapp and Transfer of User Personal Data

On 23 June, Strætó reception will relocate to new premises at Hafnarstræti 7, 101 Reykjavík. 
Customers will continue to have access to the same services as before, including assistance with tickets and reclaiming lost items.

Reception Relocating to Hafnarstræti 7

From 1 July 2026, changes will take effect in the operation of public transport in the Capital Area. A new company, Almenningssamgöngur höfuðborgarsvæðisins ohf. (ASHB), will take responsibility for planning and managing public transport services. 
The changes are part of the continued development of public transport under the Transport Agreement for the Capital Area (Samgöngusáttmálinn). Their aim is to create a more reliable and efficient public transport system for the future. 
Under the new arrangement, planning and service management will be separated from the day-to-day operation of buses. The state will also become a funding partner. There will be no changes for customers in their day-to day use of the service. All tickets will remain valid, payment methods will stay the same, and travel and service information will continue to be available through the same channels as before. 
The reception desk will move to new premises at Hafnarstræti 7, Reykjavík. Further information about the relocation and opening hours will be published shortly. 
As part of these changes, responsibility for processing customer personal data related to payment services will transfer from Strætó bs. to ASHB. More information will be published before the changes take effect. This transfer will not affect customers&#8217; rights or the services they receive. 
Customers do not need to take any action because of these changes.

Strætó schedule on 17 June

Local bus services in Reykjanesbær will operate on a summer schedule from 15 June through 15 August.
Routes R1, R3 and R4 will run hourly on weekdays, and there will be no service on Sundays. In addition, Route R3 will begin service 30 minutes later on weekdays.

Due to construction work on Skólavegur, a temporary change will be made to route R1 in Reykjanesbær. The construction is expected to take place from 11 June to 22 August.

Temporary change to route R1 in Reykjanesbær this summer

The Hvalfjörður Tunnel will reopen on 29 May at 06:00 following lighting renewal work in the tunnel. 
With the reopening of the tunnel, the temporary service reduction on route 50 will end and the route will drive according to its regular schedule. The last trips of the day will therefore no longer be cancelled. 
Route 59, however, will drive according to its temporary schedule until the summer schedule starts on 5 June.

Strætó schedule over Pentecost (Hvítasunna)

The City of Reykjavík is offering free two-month Strætó passes to children born 2010 &#8211; 2014 who have legal residence in Reykjavík.
The project is part of the city’s work to improve access to public transport for children and teenagers, support more independent travel, and reduce the need for parents to drive children to school, sports, and leisure activities.
Parents and guardians can apply for the free two-month subscription through My Pages on the website of Reykjavík City from 18 May until 30 June 2026.
Children who already have an active Strætó pass can also get two extra months added to their Klapp access, but it must be applied for through the same application form on My Pages on the website of Reykjavík City.
This initiative is managed by the City of Reykjavík, who will publish more information on its website. Parents and guardians of children in this age group will also receive a notification from island.is on 18 May with a link to the application form.

Free Strætó passes for primary school children in Reykjavík

The schedule of few rural routes of Strætó will change over the summertime. Routes in the capital area remain unchanged.

Please note: Due to changes to the Herjólfur ferry schedule, the summer timetable for Routes 51 and 53 will not take effect on 5 June as previously announced. The summer schedule for Routes 51 and 53 will take effect on 20 July and end on 23 August.
