<p class="noSpacingAbove spacingBelow lineHeight1_4" data-text-type="withSpacing">A new price list will take effect on January 6th, 2026. The increase is 3% for single fares and 3.6% for period passes.<br />
The single fare will rise from 670 kr. to 690 kr. and the 30 day passes for students, youth and seniors will increase from 5.600 kr. to 5.800 kr.<br />
The price of Klapp plastic cards remains unchanged at 1.000 kr.</p>
<p class="noSpacingAbove spacingBelow lineHeight1_4" data-text-type="withSpacing">The decision to change fares was made by the board of Strætó at its meeting on October 10th, in line with the projected consumer price index increase for the year. Strætó&#8217;s price list is reviewed twice a year, but the last time the fare was increased was on January 8th, 2025.</p>
<p class="noSpacingAbove spacingBelow lineHeight1_4" data-text-type="withSpacing">These fare changes apply to Strætó services in the capital area, while fares in the countryside remain unchanged.<br />
The new price list will take effect on Tuesday, January 6th, 2026.</p>

<p>From January 1, 2026, it will not be possible to use fares between the Klapp payment system in the capital area and Vegagerðin payment system, which owns and operates buses in the countryside. This means that a fare paid in one system cannot be used to pay for travel in the other.</p>
<ul>
<li>Strætó bs. operates public transport in the capital area and uses the Klapp payment system.</li>
<li>Vegagerðin (IRCA) owns and operates the provincial buses and has its own payment system. Strætó provides certain information and services for passengers. Passengers pay their fare on board the buses with cash, credit card or a rural bus card.</li>
</ul>
<p>We advise passengers to familiarize themselves with the fare terms and payment arrangements. This change is made to clarify the implementation and ensure a clear separation of the payment systems according to current rules.</p>

<p>Reykjanesbær has decided to increase its winter service on local buses from 2 January 2026. The aim is to improve the service and respond to <a href="https://www.straeto.is/en/user-information/news/changed-route-system-in-the-countryside">changes</a> that Vegagerðin is implementing on the route system in rural areas after the New Year.</p>

Increased service on local buses in Reykjanesbær

<p>These days, 13 new electric buses are being introduced into service by Almenningsvagnar Kynnisferðir and Hagvagnar, which operate bus services for Strætó bs. in the capital area. Last year, Strætó bs. concluded contracts with the companies following a tender process, and as a result, their entire bus fleets will be fully electric by the end of 2029. These new buses form part of that transition.</p>
<p>The buses are manufactured by the Chinese company Higer, with Icelandia acting as their local distributor. They are equipped with 482 kWh batteries and have a driving range of up to 350 km.</p>
<p>“We welcome the addition of these buses to the Strætó fleet. With their introduction, around 40 buses in Strætó’s operations are now electric, representing approximately 25% of the fleet. Our experience with operating electric buses has been very positive, and we see them as the future energy source for public transport,” says Jóhannes Svavar Rúnarsson, CEO of Strætó bs.</p>
<p>“With these buses, we at Hagvagnar are taking our first steps towards electrifying our fleet, and we are very excited about this development,” says Hjörvar Sæberg Högnason, CEO of Hagvagnar.</p>
<p>At the same time, Strætó bs. has installed charging stations at the depots of Almenningsvagnar Kynnisferðir and Hagvagnar to support the operation of these vehicles.</p>
<p>“We have had a successful partnership with Higer since 2016, and over the past two years we have been working on electrifying our fleet. It is truly exciting to be part of this energy transition in public transport in the capital area, and we will continue to move forward with the electrification of other parts of our operations. We expect to have close to 40 electric coaches in operation by the end of next year,” says Björn Ragnarsson, CEO of Icelandia and Almenningsvagnar Kynnisferðir.</p>

<p>On 23 December and 30 December, an extra trip will depart from Djúpivogur at 08:55 and from Höfn at 10:50.</p>

<p>The changed route network marks an important step towards better and more accessible public transport services in the countryside.</p>
<p>The goals are to better accommodate employment and school attendance, strengthen connections between regions, and improve links between the rural and urban route networks.</p>
<p>The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration (Vegagerðin) own and operates the provincial buses and has been working on these changes in recent months. Strætó is responsible for providing passenger information and related services.</p>
<p>The new network also supports the government’s policy to transition rural public transport to zero-emission vehicles. The foundation of this change is to align the route structure with the availability and distribution of charging infrastructure across the country. For example, all buses in South Iceland will be electric, except the one driving Höfn – Vík – Höfn.</p>

Changed route system in the countryside

<p>There have been disruptions to Strætó’s bus services, as several buses are stuck due to road conditions and traffic. Buses will, however, continue to drive, as much as possible, with an emphasis on maintaining service on all routes (October 28).</p>
<p>Strætó’s customer service is open, but the reception at Hestháls will close at 14:00. According to the Capital Area Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management, people are encouraged to plan their journey home as soon as possible, as weather and road conditions are expected to worsen throughout the day.</p>
<p>An orange weather alert will take effect at 17:00 and is already affecting parts of the country. Many regional routes have been cancelled, and passengers are advised to check the<strong> <a href="https://www.straeto.is/en/route-planner/status-of-trips" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Route Alerts</a></strong> for up-to-date information.</p>

Disruptions to bus services, but operations continue

<h3 data-start="93" data-end="144">Strætó Service on 24 October – Women’s Strike</h3>
<p data-start="146" data-end="436">Disruptions are expected in bus services around downtown Reykjavík due to road closures taking place from morning until evening in connection with the Women’s Strike on 24 October. As a result, several routes will drive detours. Routes 1, 2, 3, 6, 11, 12, 13 and 14 will operate on detours.</p>
<p data-start="438" data-end="524">The frequency will be the same as on regular Friday schedule, and standard fares apply.</p>
<p data-start="526" data-end="685">Passengers can pay a single adult fare on board using contactless payment, purchase tickets in the Klapp app, or use a Klapp ten or Klapp card.</p>
<p data-start="687" data-end="757">Customer service at Strætó may be limited due to the Women’s Strike.</p>

Strætó Service on 24 October – Women’s Strike

<p>Sigurborg Þórarinsdóttir, Director of HR and Quality management, received the Gender Balance Award (Jafnvægisvogin) on behalf of Strætó, at the annual awards ceremony held on October 9th.</p>
<p>The Gender Balance Award is a project carried out by FKA (Association of Businesswomen in Iceland) which aims to increase gender balance in the top management of companies, institutions and municipalities in Iceland. This time, 90 companies, 16 municipalities and 22 public entities received the award. The Gender Balance Award&#8217;s goal of a 40/60 gender ratio in top management was considered in the assessment.</p>
<p>The gender ratio on the board of Strætó is 50/50 and 55/45 in the executive board. The gender ratio among all managers is 60/40.</p>

Strætó receives the recognition of Jafnvægisvogin

<p>As of October 1, the timetable on route 94 will change. There will be no trips on Thursdays, but two trips will run on Wednesdays at adjusted times. All other trips remain unchanged.</p>

<p>The bus stop Borg in Grímsnes will be relocated as of 30 September and will then be situated by the swimming pool. Routes 72 and 73 stop at this location.</p>

<p>As of 30 September, routes 51 and 52 will return to their regular timetable. The schedules were temporarily adjusted while Herjólfur was in dock, but now that the ferry is out of dry dock, the routes will resume their standard schedule.</p>

<p>On Monday, 22 September, there will be free access to Strætó buses both in the capital area and in the countryside. The occasion is Car-Free Day, which is part of European mobility week that began on September 16th.</p>
<p>Car-Free Day is a great opportunity to leave the car at home and try other ways of getting around. Whether it’s hopping on the bus, cycling, walking or even jogging to work or school, the day encourages us to explore more diverse and sustainable modes of transport.</p>
<p>We invite everyone to take part and enjoy travelling in an environmentally friendly and affordable way.</p>


Car-free day – Free buses on September 22nd

<p>The theme is a call to envision and work towards a society where transport services are available, accessible, affordable, safe and inclusive. Choosing public transport, walking or cycling should be a fair option for everyone.</p>
<p>Mobility week is a European awareness-raising campaign to improve transports in cities and towns, and Strætó has participated since the campaign was first launched in Iceland.</p>
<p>A variety of engaging events will be held during the week, including the seminar <strong><em>Diverse Mobility for Everyone</em></strong>, which takes place at 9:00 on 18 September at Reykjavík City Hall. The car-free day will also be held us usual on September 22<sup>nd</sup>.</p>

Mobility Week – Mobility for Everyone

<p>In recent weeks, there has been discussion in society about the experiences of LGBTQ+ people, including in the television program <em>Hatur</em> on RÚV, where particular attention was given to the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals in public spaces. Following this discussion, Strætó has taken action and started collaboration with Flotinn – the mobile youth center – as well as the Queer youth centre at S78 (national queer organisation ) and Tjörnin leisure centre.</p>
<p>The aim of this collaboration is to ensure that all passengers feel welcome and safe on board Strætó buses, with a special focus on younger passengers and youth.</p>
<p>The collaboration focuses on:<br />
• placing special emphasis on ensuring <strong>everyone is welcome on board</strong><br />
• encouraging both staff and passengers <strong>to speak up if something happens</strong><br />
• <strong>providing inclusion education</strong> for Strætó staff<br />
•<strong> strengthening procedures</strong> to respond quickly and appropriately to incidents</p>
<p>Strætó aims to be a genuine choice for everyone and emphasizes that public transport should be a safe way to travel. In the coming weeks, the next steps of the collaboration will be developed jointly and presented to the public.</p>

Safe Public Transport – Everyone Welcome on Board

<p>An additional trip will be operated on Tuesday, 9 September, on route 93 as the Norræna ferry will be sailing that day instead of Wednesday. This is a one-time case as the ferry is now switching to its winter schedule. Therefore, there will be an additional trip on both Tuesday and Wednesday this week, but from now on it will be on Wednesdays in line with the Norræna’s sailings.</p>

<p>The timetable on route 52 will change from September 8 when Herjólfur goes to dry dock and the ferry Baldur takes over. This arrangement is expected to last until September 29.</p>
<p>Baldur will operate according to the summer schedule, and therefore it is necessary to adjust the timetable to match the new sailing times.</p>
<p>The timetable on route 51 will be adjusted on weekends during this period and will revert back as soon as Herjólfur is out of dry dock.</p>

Changes to Routes 51 and 52 September 8th

<p>On August 28, winter schedule will begin on <strong>route</strong> <strong>59</strong>.</p>
<p>On August 30, winter schedule will begin on <strong>route</strong> <strong>56</strong>.</p>
<p>On September 1, winter schedule will begin on <strong>route</strong> <strong>94</strong>. The bus will no longer stop in Breiðdalsvík, and the only stop in Höfn will be at the airport.</p>
<p><strong>Route</strong> <strong>93</strong> will also change: starting September 10, the additional trip on this route will move to Wednesdays to align with the Norræna ferry schedule.</p>
<p><strong>Routes 61</strong> and <strong>62</strong> in the Westfjords will stop operating on August 31.</p>
<p>Service has already started on <strong>routes</strong> <strong>63</strong>, <strong>64</strong>, <strong>65</strong>, and<strong> 81</strong>. These routes follow the school calendar and will therefore only operate on school days.</p>


Winter Schedule for the country side

<p>Night bus will depart from Skúlagata all weekend due to street closures on Reykjavík Culture Night. This applies to both Friday night and Saturday night.</p>
<p><strong>Inactive bus stops:</strong> Barónsstígur, Bíó Paradís, Þjóðleikhúsið, Lækjartorg A, Lækjartorg B og Ráðhúsið.</p>

<p>This change marks an important step toward better and more accessible public transportation in the capital area. The percentage of residents living within 400 meters of a bus stop with 10-minute frequency during peak hours will rise from about 18% to over <strong>50%.</strong></p>
<p>The goal of these changes is to improve residents&#8217; access to transport with good frequency and therefore increase the use of public transport.</p>
<p>This service increase is part of the Transport Agreement and Strætó’s operational plan, and also serves as preparation for the New Network set to be implemented in 2031. With the changes approaching, it is important that users familiarize themselves with them.</p>
