Increased Strætó Service Starting August 17

Strætó will significantly increase its services, but as of August 17, 2025, there will be a significant increase in public transport services in the capital area.

This change marks an important step toward better and more accessible public transportation in the capital area. The percentage of residents living within 400 meters of a bus stop with 10-minute frequency during peak hours will rise from about 18% to over 50%.

The goal of these changes is to improve residents’ access to transport with good frequency and therefore increase the use of public transport.

This service increase is part of the Transport Agreement and Strætó’s operational plan, and also serves as preparation for the New Network set to be implemented in 2031. With the changes approaching, it is important that users familiarize themselves with them.

We are significantly improving the service

  • Increased service in all municipalities in the capital area
  • Longer evening service hours
  • Shorter travel time from Kópavogur and Breiðholt with a new priority lane
  • Extended service hours in Kjalarnes and greatly increased frequency

The route planner has been updated, so users can now find the best route for their journey by using the Route Planner by selecting August 17 or later, when the service increase takes effect.
