Today we are launching a beta version of Strætó’s new website at beta.straeto.is. The website has been redesigned from the ground up and will replace the current website in the near future. The aim is to make it easier for passengers to plan their journeys and to provide better and clearer information, on both phones and computers. Following the launch, the journey planner in the Klapp app will also be updated.
The website was designed and developed by Studio Atli & Sammi in close collaboration with ASHB staff. It is still a work in progress, and we warmly welcome feedback and ideas through the form on the new website.
The main new features include:
- Improved journey planner
The journey planner has been updated and now provides better suggestions. Search has also improved, making it easier to find addresses, places and stops. Your journey is shown step by step, including walking routes, fares and weather. You can also share it with others.
- Improved map with the entire route network
The map now shows Strætó’s entire route network across the country and is both more detailed and clearer than before. With the routes displayed on the map, it is much easier to track buses in real time and find your way around the route network. You can also tap anywhere on the map and start a search from there, and the map also shows the weather and e-scooters.

- Improved real-time information
Bus location information now arrives faster and is more accurate than before.
In the new interface, you can select a bus and follow it, seeing where it is and which route it is running.

- Easier to find stops
Each stop now has its own page showing upcoming departures in real time, and you can save it to “My stops” to find it again quickly. If you allow location access, the website also shows nearby stops, making it quick to find the closest stop and see when the next bus is coming.

- Detours and Disruptions
Detours and temporary stops are now shown on maps and in trip information. Notices about service changes appear on the front page.

- New chatbot
A specially trained chatbot is available around the clock in Icelandic and English. Among other things, it helps with trip planning and lost property, and answers other questions about the service. During opening hours, you can get in touch with customer service staff.
- Interface and accessibility
The website is designed with different devices in mind, and a dark mode can be selected. Accessibility has been a guiding principle from the outset. It has been tested with screen readers and with reference to the WCAG 2.2 AA standard. Strætó worked in close consultation with Blindrafélagið (the Icelandic Association of the Visually Impaired), and user testing was carried out by Sjá.

Behind the scenes, staff are also getting new systems to manage timetables, the route network, lost property and customer service. These are intended to provide passengers with more accurate and faster information.
