On Tuesday 22 September, Strætó buses in the Capital Area will be free of charge to celebrate Car-Free Day. 
Car-Free Day marks the end of European Mobility Week, which began on 16 September. Car-Free Day is a great opportunity to leave the car at home and try more environmentally friendly ways of getting around. We encourage everyone to take part and try diverse modes of transportation that are both good for us and the environment.

Þriðjudaginn 22. september verður frítt í Strætó á höfuðborgarsvæðinu í tilefni bíllausa dagsins.  
Með bíllausa deginum ljúkum við Evrópskri samgönguviku sem hófst þann 16. september síðastliðinn. Þema vikunnar í ár var Samgöngur fyrir öll – þvert á kynslóðir.   
Bíllausi dagurinn er frábært tækifæri til að leggja bílnum til hliðar og prófa aðra vistvænni ferðamáta. Hvort sem það er að hoppa um borð í Strætó gjaldfrjálst, hjóla, ganga eða jafnvel skokka í vinnu og skóla.  
Við hvetjum fólk til að taka þátt og nýta sér fjölbreytta ferðamáta sem eru bæði góðir fyrir okkur og umhverfið.

Car-Free Day 2026 – Free buses on 22 September

Strætó’s NaviLens project, which makes public transport more accessible for blind and visually impaired people and others through specially designed codes at bus stops, received the 2026 ITS Award at the Transport Conference held yesterday, September 16th.
The jury highlighted that the solution uses smart technology and real-time information to enhance the independence of blind and visually impaired people and make public transport more accessible to everyone.
Using NaviLens codes, blind and visually impaired passengers can independently access information about Strætó routes and arrival times. Through the NaviLens app, the information is read aloud, allowing users to access real-time information about bus services without assistance from others.
However, the solution is not only useful for blind and visually impaired people. It can also make information more accessible to sighted passengers, tourists, people who do not speak Icelandic and people with reading difficulties. The project demonstrates how effective accessibility solutions can benefit a wide range of passengers and contribute to more equal access to public transport.
Collaboration for better accessibility
The project is a collaboration between the Icelandic Organization of the Visually Impaired (Blindrafélagið) and Strætó. Strætó leads the project, and the NaviLens codes are owned and maintained by Strætó.
The City of Reykjavík has supported the project from the beginning, both in its planning and implementation. City staff have been responsible for installing the codes at bus shelters and poles throughout the city. Síminn/Billboard has also supported the project by installing NaviLens codes at all bus shelters under its management.
The award is therefore also recognition of the important collaboration between these partners in making information and public transport more accessible to everyone.

European Mobility Week begins tomorrow 16 September and runs until 22 September.
Mobility Week aims to encourage people to use diverse modes of transport that are sustainable, economical, and beneficial to health. This year´s theme is Mobility for everyone – intergenerational fairness.
In the Capital Area, the week kicks off with the Transport Conference organised by ITS Iceland. It concludes with the Car-Free Day where Strætó in the Capital area will be free of charge.
People are encouraged to utilise diverse transport modes throughout the week. Further information can be found at

Mobility Week – Take Part!

Route 66 has now been added to the regional bus network. The route drive through Patreksfjörður, Tálknafjörður and Bíldudalur, and continues to Bíldudalur Airport. The route starts to operate September 1st.
Route 66 operates in accordance with Norlandair’s published flight schedule at Bíldudalur Airport. The route does not operate for additional Norlandair flights that are outside the published flight schedule.
The bus follows the timetable, but times may change if Norlandair’s flight schedule changes, for example due to winter weather and road conditions. Passengers are advised to check the flight schedule if weather or road conditions are poor.

New route in the Westfjords added to the regional bus network

Changes to the route 56 service will take effect from September 1, when the route will no longer drive on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The winter schedule will then come into effect on September 6, with changes to departure times as follows:

<li>On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, the departure from Akureyri Airport will change from 14:53 to 16:35.</li>
<li>On Sundays, the departure from Egilsstaðir will change from 08:30 to 12:20, and the departure from Akureyri Airport will change from 16:35 to 16:50.</li>

Winter schedule on route 56

The winter timetable for Route 59, Borgarnes–Hólmavík, begins on Tuesday, September 1. The route will continue to operate on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays. However, departure times will change on Wednesdays and Fridays, and on Wednesdays the route will operate only between Borgarnes and Búðardalur.
