KLAPP is a new account based ticketing system for Strætó in the capital area that will be formally implemented on 16 November 2021.
KLAPP is a new account based ticketing system for Strætó in the capital area that will be formally implemented on 16 November 2021. This type of system is known in public transport around the world, where a card or mobile phone is placed up to a scanner when fares are paid.
There are 3 payment methods in the KLAPP system: KLAPP card, KLAPP app and KLAPP ten.
KLAPP card
KLAPP cards are smart cards that you place up to a scanner on board the bus when paying the fare. You can buy KLAPP cards at straeto.is and at all Strætó vendors in the capital area. The KLAPP card is topped up on „My pages“.
You can buy KLAPP cards from Strætó dealers in the capital area and in the Strætó online store.
KLAPP app
With the KLAPP app, you can use your smartphone to buy individual tickets or period passes for Strætó in the capital area. You can download KLAPP app on the App Store and Google Play.
KLAPP ten
KLAPP ten is a paper pass with 10 fares for either adults, young people or the elderly. This product replaces the old paper bus tickets. The cardboard card has a code that you scan on board the bus. The scanner shows how many trips are left on the card. You can buy KLAPP ten from all Strætó vendors in the capital area and at straeto.is.
New price structure
Along with the introduction of the KLAPP ticketing system changes will also be made to the Strætó price structure. The aim of the change is first and foremost to simplify the price structure and enable all groups to buy a monthly card at a favorable price. Here you can see the new price structure:

What happens to the old ticketing system?
Below is information on what will happen to the old payment system on November 16, 2021:
The Strætó app
On November 16 2021, it will no longer be possible to buy new tickets or bus passes in the Strætó app. Customers will instead be directed to the KLAPP app.
Customers that have an active bus card in the Strætó app will continue to use them until their validition time expires. After that they will switch to the Klapp payment system.
Customers with active subscriptions will complete their three-month cycle. After the third „free month“, it will not be possible to purchase a new subscription.
Those who have unused tickets in the Strætó app on 16 November 2021 have one year to use them.
To begin with, the current Strætó app will continue to be used as a trip planner or to track the buses in real time. It will also still be possible to country tickets in the Strætó app.
Paper tickets
The old Strætó paper tickets will be replaced by a new product called KLAPP ten (KLAPP tía).
KLAPP ten is a cardboard pass with 10 tickets for either adults, young people or the elderly. The cardboard pass has a code that is scanned on board the bus. The scanner shows how many trips are left on the pass. You can buy KLAPP ten from all Strætó vendors in the capital area or on straeto.is.
It will continue to be possible to pay with paper tickets on board Strætó buses in the capital area and in the countryside until 1 March 2022.
Customers who want to exchange old tickets for credit in the KLAPP system have until March 16, 2022 to do so.
Printed Bus Cards
Customers that have an active bus card will continue to use them until their validition time expires. After that they will switch to the Klapp payment system.
Cash
It will continue to be possible to pay in cash until Strætó announces otherwise. Drivers can not give change.
Disabled people will not be able to get discount fare if they pay with cash. However, they can get 70% discount by in the Klapp payment system.
