Downtown Reykjavík

Because of road closures, many routes will take a detour, but buses will stop at all bus stops along the detours.
<h3>Route 1 </h3>
<ul>
<li>From 10:30-15:00. Instead of driving Lækjargata and Suðurgata, detour through Sæbraut, Snorrabraut and Hringbraut to and from HÍ and Skúlagata.</li>
<li>From 10:30 – 13:30. Gamla Hringbraut is closed and the route will drive through Hringbraut instead.</li>
</ul>
<h3>Route 2 </h3>
<ul>
<li>From 10:30 -15:00. Instead of driving Hverfisgata, Vonarstræti and Suðurgata, detour through Snorrabraut abd Hringbraut to and from HÍ.</li>

Strætó schedule on the First day of Summer 2026

Strætó is joining the global celebration for the first ever World Public Transport Day on 17 April 2026. The day is a global initiative led by , the International Association of Public Transport, highlighting the importance of public transport for everyday life, communities, and the environment. On this occasion, Strætó will encourage people and passengers to share their experiences using different modes of transport.
The aim is to celebrate the role public transport plays – getting people from place to place, to work, school, and leisure – and to recognise the people who make it all possible. This year’s theme is: One Day. Millions of Journeys.
Public transport plays a key role in building greener and more efficient cities. It reduces traffic and improves air quality. Every day, millions of journeys are made by public transport around the world.
In recent years, Strætó has taken important steps towards more sustainable operations by investing in electric buses, with the goal of achieving a fully carbon-neutral fleet by the end of 2029.
This is a great opportunity to pause and reflect on the role public transport plays in our daily lives – and in keeping our communities moving.

World Public Transport Day celebrated for the first time on 17 April

Changes will be made to route 53 services due to a closure of the main road near Hella on 14 April.
<ul>
<li>The 19:29 departure from Selfoss will operate only as far as Hella.</li>
<li>The 20:13 departure from Hvolsvöllur will not depart from Hvolsvöllur but will instead start from Hella at 20:25.</li>
<li>The 20:40 departure from Landeyjahöfn will not depart from Landeyjahöfn but will instead start from Hella at 21:15.</li>
</ul>
Ferry Herjólfur will sail to Þorlákshöfn this evening, and an additional bus marked “Herjólfur” will operate between Mjódd and Þorlákshöfn.
Please note that the closure may also affect the first route 53 departure on 15 April. Further information will be published here as soon as it becomes available.

Route 53 service changes due to road closure on 14 April

The closure of the Hvalfjörður Tunnel will affect the operation of two rural bus routes, routes 50 and 59. The tunnel will be closed from 7 April to 29 May between 21:30 and 06:00. The closure is due to lighting upgrades in the tunnel. Work takes place from Sunday to Friday, meaning services on Fridays and Saturdays are not affected.

The trip from Borgarnes to Búðardalur will  depart at 16:50 instead of 18:10.
The trip from Búðardalur to Borgarnes will depart at 18:05 instead of 19:20.
Passengers travelling onwards to the capital area from this trip will transfer to route 57 instead of Route 50. Route 57 departs from Borgarnes at 19:16.
Sundays
The trip from Borgarnes to Hólmavík will depart at 14:50 instead of 15:00.
The trip from Hólmavík to Borgarnes will depart at 17:03 instead of 17:13.
Passengers travelling onwards to the capital area from this trip will transfer to route 57 instead of Route 50. Route 57 departs from Borgarnes at 19:30.

Closure of Hvalfjörður Tunnel affects Routes 50 and 59

From Tuesday, April 7, all trips on Route 26 will operate as a pre-order service. The route and timetable remain unchanged; however, all trips must be booked by calling Hreyfill at +354 588 5522 at least 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time according to the timetable.
