Better connections and more stops on Strætó’s University route

Strætó is expanding its services in the coming days with significant changes to route 8, the University route, introducing new stops and more transfer options. The changes will take effect on 15 October, improving connections between the universities in Vatnsmýri, major workplaces in the area, and Reykjavík city centre.

Route 8 has been extended and will now serve the University of Iceland, Lækjartorg and Skúlagata, in addition to Reykjavík University and Gamla Hringbraut, as before. The changes will make it easier for students and staff to transfer between buses, significantly increase transfer options, and improve transport links between the two universities and major workplaces in the area. Route 8 operates every 10 minutes during the morning and afternoon rush hours on weekdays.

The extension also marks a step towards a revised bus network in connection with infrastructure developments at Fossvogsbrú bridge and Nauthólsvegur. Once Fossvogsbrú opens in 2028, Route 8 is expected to be adjusted to align with the planned Borgarlína route. It will run from Skúlagata to the two universities, cross Fossvogsbrú to Hamraborg, and then continue through Kópavogur.

These changes are part of the ongoing development of public transport in the capital region, aimed at improving services for Strætó passengers and taking meaningful steps towards a reliable and efficient public transport system.
